When my daughter was in her preschool and early elementary school years, she really struggled to "take off" in reading.
Her reading was slow and laborious, even in the younger elementary years. "Just sound it out" became a dreaded phrase.
Instead of a pleasurable time together, reading was becoming a chore. She was coming home with lists of sight words, but she could not keep up with the expected "levels" for her age.
If her teacher and I had used decodable books and text passages like these with a good phonics program, she would have taken off more quickly.
I wouldn't have needed to be so stressed about it.
Phonetic concepts & phonemic awareness are essential for reading, especially in the early stages. These skills can make all the difference.
Even holding a degree in Elementary Education, and with years of classroom teaching, my children were missing some of these components. When I began to supplement my daughter's instruction with these concepts, her reading soared. (And it worked for my youngest son too).
(P.S. - My daughter is now a straight A student (a Junior in High School - all AP classes, and in the Honor Society. (Pardon the Mom brag.) :)
It won't be long from now when you will look back, knowing that you taught your child these early reading skills, & you will be super PROUD, too!
What exactly are decodables?
A "decodable" refers to a type of sentence, passage, or book that can be read by a beginning reader because all the words included can be "decoded" by phonics and sound/letter concepts that the student has already learned. In a decodable passage, ideally your reader will not encounter any words that he has never been taught how to read. Important: No words in the text need should have to be "guessed" by looking at pictures or other clues. Decodable passages help your child feel successful. There is no guessing - only reading!
What order do you go in for the phonics concepts?
This is an important question, because different phonics programs use a differing order of progression. In general, here is how I ordered these mini decodables. (See the picture below.) Note that all of the decodables except for the alphabet booklets do include a few words from Fry's high frequency word list.
Are these engaging and highly enjoyable stories for children?
Well, no! These do not have highly developed characters or plot twists of any kind. They are sentences and passages meant for practicing phonics concepts. Although the passages are cohesive and the sentences all have subject/verb agreement, they are meant to be silly, whimsical (and yes, a bit nonsense) little sentences and passages that only contain words that the child already knows how to decode. Although I've tried to make passages that bring you & your child a bit of a chuckle, the enjoyment here is in learning how to read in itself. :)

~ To enjoy reading, a child must be able to read first! ~
